Emergency Waterline Repair
While NW Natural’s crews were recently working through the D Avenue and 8th Street intersection, they discovered an old, cracked 2” water pipe. City crews will begin repairing this portion of pipe in the next week. This will require a full closure of the intersection at 8th Street and D Avenue, during work hours. Access will be maintained for residents that live in the closed area.
Upcoming Preliminary Work
Starting this week, surveyors will begin staking the right-of-way and preparing the project area for major construction.
During the week of April 30, crews will begin bringing in equipment, setting up erosion control and tree protection fencing, trimming tree branches and removing 49 trees located in the right-of-way, which are permitted for removal. Trees will be chipped on-site using a large chipper truck, and hauled off-site for recycling and reuse. Neighbors should expect to see and hear a large chipper truck and crews using chainsaws. Temporary block closures will be in place as crews move through the corridor along D.
Starting the week of May 7, crews expect to begin the major utility work. One crew will begin installing a new waterline on 1st Street, between E and D, and a second crew will begin installing a new stormline in the project area (exact starting location will be determined closer to the date as work needs to be coordinated with NW Natural’s gas relocation and the City’s waterline repair).
Know Before You Go
With the gas relocation work continuing on D Avenue, the water line repair work and our main contractor starting soon, there will be a lot of construction activity taking place in the project area and neighborhood. Crews will be overlapping, but all work will be coordinated.
During work hours, temporary road closures will be in place in the blocks where crews are working. No through traffic will be allowed during work hours in these active work areas, access is only permitted for local residents.
Please be alert, drive safely and plan ahead for travel delays.
Work hours are 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Please note, construction schedules change frequently. We will strive to keep residents informed through these regular updates.
We appreciate your patience and understanding with the construction.
