The Wastewater (Sanitary Sewer) Collection System Rehabilitation project (Work Order 073) is being constructed by K&R Plumbing Construction Co., Inc. The project was designed by the consulting firm of Brown and Caldwell. The project is part of the Annual Sanitary Sewer Line Rehabilitation work identified within the City's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). A primary project objective is reduction of system inflow and infiltration (I/I). Other objectives are to upgrade the structural integrity and hydraulic capabilities of the system.
The goals of I/I reduction are to reduce the volume of surface and ground water that enters the City's sanitary sewer pipelines and manholes through cracks, separated joints and other defects. Reduction of I/I helps keep the City's costs for wastewater treatment down and helps mitigate the potential of undesirable backups and overflows.
The City's wastewater maintenance crews perform regular cleaning and inspection of the wastewater collection system. Inspection includes passing a television camera through the pipelines. During the TVing, a video tape is recorded and a written report prepared that describes any defects observed. Approximately 30 miles of system pipelines are cleaned and inspected each year. Evaluation of the tapes and reports result in condition assessment and classification of the various segments of the system. Using the condition assessment classifications, a group of the worst line segments were selected for this rehabilitation project.
Among the manholes selected for rehabilitation are a group within the Blue Heron and Canal Basins that feed into those areas in Cardinal Drive and the Main Canal where overflows occurred during December 2005 and January 2006. Among the line segments selected for rehabilitation are lines in the Lower Drive, Rosewood Street and Lakview Boulevard area that feed into the Bryant Road at West Bay area where overflows occurred during December 2005 and January 2006. Other segments selected are in the North Shore Road and First Addition Neighborhood. Those lines also feed into the Lake Interceptor system, but downstream from where the recent overflows occurred.
Project Update:
Construction is underway in the Evergreen and First Addition Neighborhoods. Periodic contractor access is required in the alleys in these neighborhoods.
Our Contractor, K & R Plumbing Construction, Co. is knocking on doors/leaving door hangers notifying residents when work will begin on their block.
Rehabilitation work began in mid-November 2006 and is scheduled to be substantially complete by the end of April 2007.
