Water

The City provides potable water to more than 35,000 customers within Lake Oswego. In addition, surplus water is also provided to wholesale water customers, including the cities of Tigard and Portland, and the Lake Grove, Glenmorrie, and Skylands Water Districts.

The City wholly owns and operates a municipal water supply system capable of providing up to 16 million gallons per day (MGD) of high quality, pleasant tasting water that exceeds all current drinking water standards mandated under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).

The City's Water Treatment Plant (WTP) produces approximately 2.5 billion gallons of water each year.

The source of the City's water is the Clackamas River. Water from the river is withdrawn near the City of Gladstone and pumped across the Willamette River to the treatment plant in West Linn. Treated and filtered water is then pumped from the plant through a 24-inch wide pipeline to the City's distribution system, which consists of 15 storage reservoirs, 13 pump stations including the river intake, and about 210 miles of water mains.

In 2001, the City completed an update to its 1998 Water Master Plan. The new Water System Master Plan will be an important planning tool in determining how to continue to provide water to the citizens of Lake Oswego and our surplus water customers efficiently and economically, now and into the future.  A few of the more important recommendations to come out of the update effort include strengthening water system interties with other water providers to reduce reliance on stored water for emergency needs, develop and implement a comprehensive water conservation program to more efficiently use our source water, pursue partnerships with other water providers to meet our future water needs and encourage owners of large buildings to install fire sprinkler systems for improved protection of life and property and reduce reliance on expensive reservoirs for fire suppression storage.

The City's water system is operated and maintained by the Engineering and Maintenance Services departments. The Maintenance Services Department ensures the system functions properly to provide water when and where needed and in volumes sufficient for the intended uses. It also manages leak detection and cross connection control programs to ensure water conservation and protection from contamination.

Lake Oswego's treatment plant, Engineering, and Maintenance Services staff comprise a team of experts committed to providing the City of Lake Oswego and its neighbors the best water service possible now and into the future.
