In 2010, A Avenue was identified as a road that was heading toward failure after the city's road network was inspected, but whose lifespan could be extended with appropriate investment. Although this road is in better condition than some in the city, now is the most cost effective time to repave it. A Avenue is an arterial road and as such over 20,000 vehicles drive over it, the more traffic the faster the road will degrade.
The A Avenue Rehabilitation Project will include repaving all of A Avenue from State Street to 10th Street, replacing most of the sidewalk corner curb ramps, redesigning a median to allow left turns and eastbound A Avenue onto northbound 3rd St., and to improve stormwater facilities (i.e. catch basins). This project is scheduled to begin in July and continue until Labor Day.
To rehabilitate the pavement the city’s contractor will remove the top layer of asphalt and repave it versus having to rebuild the road which will cost at least 3 times as much. Cost is not the only consideration, the amount of construction time is also taken into consideration. If this road need to be rebuilt construction would take far longer than the 1.5 months it will take to complete this project. |
