Early Literacy Newsletter for Parents
Your school-age youngsters are back in school, but what about your very young children? It’s never too early to start exposing them to the world of literacy. According to recent brain research discoveries, it’s essential to give birth to five-year olds stimulating literacy experiences. The payoff is greater school success later on, based on stronger language, reading, and writing competencies. Library storytimes utilize research-based techniques to help kids build early literacy skills. To help parents extend the benefits of storytime, we’ve launched a quarterly newsletter that includes book suggestions and related fingerplays, crafts, and other simple and fun activities. To view the Early Literacy Newsletter go to http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/library/. So far, 54 people are receiving email notification when we publish a new edition. You can too! Just scroll to the bottom of the newsletter and click on “subscribe.”

Musical Laptime for Babies Series
Our fall musical laptime series, geared especially for babies (birth through 18 months), recently kicked off. September Performing Arts Program
Did you know that since opera first began, composers chose the most shocking stories of scandal, political intrigue, forbidden love, and haunting death? Opera Theater Oregon’s Executive Director Elizaebeth Nielsen-Sheller recently gave a fascinating talk about the dramatic literature behind great operas. For more information about the Performing Arts Series, which is made possible by the Friends of the Library, go to http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/library/AdultCalendar.htm

Oregon Authors Website
There’s a great website about Oregon authors that you might enjoy exploring. Go to www.oregonauthors.org/ to find all kinds of information about books written by Oregonians. One of our own reference librarians, Kim Wilson-St. Clair, is a member of the committee that maintains the website. But there’s more! The Oregon Authors website lists a title we’ve been very excited about: The Diary of Will Pomeroy: A Boy’s Life in 1883 Oswego, Oregon. Our wonderful reference librarian Claire Kellogg, who oversees the Library’s local history collection, is the book’s editor. Lake Oswego resident Susannah Kuo,
co-editor of the Diary, is also listed on the website.
