Fourth Annual Lake Oswego Reads Kicks Off
“Thank you so much, great party!” That was one of the many positive comments we received as hundreds of Library visitors poured into the Library during our big Lake Oswego Reads kick-off event. Thanks to the Friends of the Lake Oswego Library, we gave away 800 free copies of the featured book, The Whistling Season. Visitors also enjoyed a variety of cultural experiences that tied in with the book and Lake Oswego’s Centennial celebration. Outside the Library there was a blacksmith demonstration by Berkley Tack. Inside, while David Lipkind played harmonica, we served fruit pie, popcorn, ginger cookies, cocoa, coffee, and tea. Thanks to the Oswego Heritage Council, the special “guests” included: our first librarian Lucia Bliss, 1910 Lake Oswego baseball player Charles Didzun, Lake Oswego First Marshall Charles Haines, and first Lake Oswego Mayor (1910) Jerome W. Thomas. Several art displays were featured which YOU can still view through the end of February. Hanging above our main floor are eight fabulous quilts, inspired by The Whistling Season, created by the Cover to Cover Book Group. We also have kinetic art pieces depicting circus acts from long ago, a 1910 wedding dress, and an early 1900s telephone. For information about all the exciting Lake Oswego Reads events coming up, go to www.lakeoswegoreads.org. As one participant said, “I love how everyone comes together for this event. It’s a great way to see people in the community who you don’t always get to see.”
