Volunteers Honored
We love our Library volunteers! We have an amazing total of 487 volunteers, more than ever before. A record number of new volunteers, 46, joined the ranks just this year. All of these dedicated people donated a whopping total of over 13, 500 hours of work this past year alone.
One of the ways we thank our adult volunteers is to host a special luncheon for them each year. The 33rd Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon took place on June 4 at the Oswego Lake Country Club. In keeping with this year’s “Hats Off to Our Library Volunteers” theme, attendees wore a variety of whimsical and fun hats.
Coordinator of Volunteer Services and Programs Cyndie Glazer organized the luncheon, which had almost 150 attendees. Mayor Jack Hoffman gave a moving keynote speech on the importance of volunteers and the value of libraries. He presented a special award (an engraved silver star) to volunteer Rosemary Chaffey for her 35 years of service. (Hoffman and Chaffey are pictured above.)
Three volunteers received special awards, including an engraved clock. These clocks, which are highly prized by past recipients, symbolize the value of the volunteer’s time spent helping the Library. Marseda Laing won an Outstanding Service award in recognition of her 10 years of service in the Circulation Department, efficiently organizing carts of materials so they are ready to be shelved. Betty Ager also won an Outstanding Service award for covering hardbound books for over 13 years. Brigitte Dennett, a volunteer for three years, was named the Outstanding Leadership volunteer for picking up the Luscher Farm bookdrop materials with the help of her three sons. The Library applauds her for setting an excellent example for her children of giving back to the community. Certificates for outstanding service were also awarded as follows: Joyce Dutcher, Pat Henderson, Vicki King, the Blue Herron Chapter of the National Charity League, and the Friends of the Lake Oswego Library. In addition, special recognition was given to the many volunteers who have helped with the Library’s local history projects and with Lake Oswego Reads.
Library Director Bill Baars addressed the group, thanking the volunteers for all they do. Circulation Manager Donna Ainslie, Reference Manager Jane Carr, and Youth Services Manager Jackie Rose, as well as Reference Librarian Claire Kellogg, were the award presenters, and they sang the praises of the individual award winners. Cyndie Glazer summed up the Library staff’s sentiments as follows: “At the Library, we promote volunteerism and are rewarded and recharged by the results. This past year, our volunteers have made a tremendous difference at the Library. We appreciate our volunteers and the staff at the Library will always take our hats off to them.”
New Batch Added to Historic Photo Collection
Reference Librarian Claire Kellogg oversees the Library’s renowned local history collection. Claire is elated because she just finished a mammoth project! Over many months, she has been cataloguing hundreds of historic photos loaned to us by the daughters of the deceased Harold and Clarence Kruse. Claire recently finished cataloging a final batch of 129 historic photos from Harold Kruse's album that include pictures taken during the time Kruse worked in the Portland area construction industry. Notably, there are photos of the construction of the Vista Avenue Bridge and Temple Beth Israel.
