Library Summer Reading Clubs

Summertime is a great time to visit your Library and join a summer reading club.  We offer clubs for kids, teens, and adults that include the chance to win prizes (courtesy of the Friends of the Library) just for enjoying books.  Why not stop by the Library and immerse yourself in the riches of the written word and enjoy our exciting cultural programs.  And it’s all free!  Summer reading club sign-up begins June 1 and continues through the summer.  For more information please go to http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/library/.

Volunteers Help Prepare for Children’s Summer Reading

Five able Clackamas Community College students worked for three hours stuffing the summer reading club bags we will hand out to young summer readers when they join the program. The bags include a flyer about the Get Creative@ Your Library kids summer reading club, a reading record to keep track of books read, a bookmark, a sticker, and coupons from local businesses.   Our goal is to stuff 2,000 bags before summer reading kicks off!  The students, pictured above, were required to do a community project in their sociology class and chose to help the Library.

A Cornucopia of Programs in June

We are presenting an amazing array of special events in June!  The offerings include a concert, art exhibit, author talk, Flamenco dance performance, writing workshop, resume writing workshop, job hunting workshop, open-mic night, poetry reading, teen gaming tournament, and children’s concerts.  The Library’s website has all the details:  http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/library/news.htm

Wisdom Writers Reception and Display

Over 40 people attended a recent reception we held for Wisdom Writers Group.  During May, the Library has been hosting an exhibit featuring their photos and writings.  This local group of women, (pictured above), write about their life stories, including experiences during the Great Depression and World War II.  The celebration included cookies, Glenn Miller Big Band music, and lots of positive comments by attendees.

Lake Oswego Reads and Lake Oswego Helps Others Read

Thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of the Library, we gave away 800 copies of Stubborn Twig during the 2009 (third annual) Lake Oswego Reads program.  In past years, we donated extra copies of our featured book to other libraries in Oregon.  In 2009,

every community in the state read the same book and extra copies were not needed.   We’re delighted to announce, however, that our extra Stubborn Twig books will be donated to the Modoc County Library (CA) for their community reading program.  Their Library Director, Cheryl Baker, is delighted.  “What a generous offer!”  It so happens that  the Yasui family in Stubborn Twig was interned at Tule Lake (now a national monument) which is located in Modoc County.  We could not have found the perfect place to donate our Stubborn Twin books to without the help of James Shoaf, our wonderful Library intern, who contacted Modoc County Library.  The Catlin Gabel High School student and Lake Oswego resident (pictured above) decided to help our library as part of his senior project.  If you want to donate your copy of Stubborn Twig to Modoc County Library, please drop it off at our Library.
