The Whistling Season Photo Scavenger Hunt Guidelines

For students in grades 7-12

 

This program is presented by the Lake Oswego Public Library Teen Advisory Board and sponsored by West Coast Bank, Friends of the Library and Lake Oswego Rotary Club.   Students do not have to read The Whistling Season to participate.

 

Five Scavenger Hunt Items to Photograph

Note: Photos may be of the actual item or a creative representation of it.  For example, the photo of a horse may be of a real horse, sculpture, painting or other representation.

 

       1.Horse

          (Significance: Paul Milliron, the main character in The Whistling Season, sits backward on a horse in a race with           a classmate.)

 

       2.Garden tool (Must be a tool that is not motorized or electric)

         (Significance: The Milliron family lives on a farm in Montana in 1909-1910.)

 

        3.Doily

         (Significance: One of the characters in The Whistling Season is constantly making doilies, and her home is

          filled with them.)

 

        4.Latin book (Examples:  Latin language instruction book, book of Latin terms or  phrases,  Latin-English            dictionary, book written in Latin.)           

          (Significance: Paul Milliron studies Latin to further his chances of going to college.)

 

       5.Historic building or structure in Lake Oswego

          (Significance: This celebrates the 1910 setting of The Whistling Season and the founding of the City of Lake             Oswego). To find historic buildings, go to:

Four Criteria for Submission

 

        1. Participants must submit five separate photos, each featuring one of the scavenger hunt items.

 

        2. Participants must be pictured in the photo with the scavenger hunt item.

 

        3.Photos must have captions describing the content.

 

        4.Content must be appropriate for general audience viewing.

 

Camera

Any camera, including cell phone cameras may be used.

 

How to Submit Photos

Photos must be e-mailed to lochild@ci.oswego.or.us by midnight on February 19. 

Include your name, grade, phone number and e-mail address. 

Note: Each e-mail submission must be smaller than 10 megabytes. Participants may send more than one e-mail to         complete submission if necessary.

 

Photos not taken with a digital camera may be delivered to the Library’s Youth Services department by 6:00 pm on February 19.

 

Raffle Prizes

The names of those who successfully complete the scavenger hunt and submit their photos by the deadline will be entered in a raffle.  Four names will be drawn, and each will win a $25 gift card to Borders Books and Music.

 

Web Post and Candy Bar for All

The photos of all participants who successfully complete the hunt will be posted on the Library’s Lake Oswego Reads web page.  All finishers will also earn a candy bar.

 

 

Note: The Library reserves the right to disqualify photos that do not meet the content criteria mentioned above.
