What is Early Literacy? Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school. There are six early literacy skills that parents can incorporate into their children's daily life. These six skills are: Vocabulary, Print Motivation, Print Awareness, Narrative Skills, Phonological Awareness, and Letter Knowledge. This newsletter's purpose is to help parents of children from birth to age five put early literacy principles into practice. You can help your baby, toddler and preschooler learn important skills now so they can become good readers. There are many simple and fun ways to do this. We invite you to bring your child to Library storytimes, which utilize research-based techniques to build early literacy skills. This newsletter will help you extend storytime benefits by including book-related fingerplays, crafts, and other activities. |

One of the six Early Literacy skills is Print Motivation. Print Motivation is a child's interest in and enjoyment of books. Children who have fun with books want to be read to. When you read at home, look for ways to pull your child into the book and get her actively involved in the storytelling. Here are some fun newer books to share with your toddler and preschooler. |

Rain Stick Craft |

This is a fun and easy craft for your preschooler.
You will need:
A paper towel or wrapping paper tube
aluminum foil
beans, beads, or rice to make a rattling sound
tape
markers
Directions:
1. Take a piece of aluminum foil and roll it up so that it looks like a snake.
2. Shape the rolled foil into a coil and put it in the paper towel tube.
3. Put tape on one side of the tube
4. Put the beans (beads/rice) in the tube and tape the other side.
5. Decorate using markers

| The Library offers a special bag, containing new children's cardboard books and a parenting book, for parents of newborns. These Books for Babies bags are for babies from birth to six months old and for Lake Oswego Residents only. Funding for Books for Babies is provided by the Friends of the Library.
