Issue 10
What is Early Literacy? Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school. There are six early literacy skills that parents can incorporate into their children's daily life. These six skills are: Vocabulary, Print Motivation, Print Awareness, Narrative Skills, Phonological Awareness, and Letter Knowledge. More detailed information about these six skills is available at http://multcolib.org/birthtosix/elitskills.html/
You can help your baby, toddler and preschooler learn important skills now so they can become good readers. There are many simple and fun ways to do this. We invite you to bring your child to Library storytimes, which utilize research-based techniques to build early literacy skills. This newsletter will help you extend storytime benefits by including book-related activites, fingerplays and crafts.
In this issue we feature favorite bedtime stories, songs, fingerplays and quiet time music. Bedtime is the perfect time to curl up and read books. Encourage print motivation by making shared book reading a special time and letting your child see that you enjoy reading. When reading a book to your child, periodically point to the text as you read the words. This emphasizes that it is the print on the page that is being read, not the pictures and helps develop print awareness.

Fingerplay/Song for Preschoolers and Toddlers |
There were ten in the bed
(hold up two hands, finger extended, palms facing out)
And the little one said,
"Roll over, roll over!"
(make hands into fists and roll them)
So they all rolled over
And One fell out
(wiggle one finger)
There were Nine in the bed
(hold up two hands, 9 fingers extended, palms facing out)
Continue until...
There was one in the bed
and the little one said
"Good Night"!

"I'm not Sleepy!" by Jonathan Allen is a delightful bedtime book. After you share the story, have your child make his or her own sleepy owl. Print out the picture of the owl and decorate with materials from your
home. You can use yarn, feathers, buttons, fabric, or just markers.

Singing a lullaby or listening to quiet songs is a great way to help your child relax.
We have many lullaby and quiet music CDs in our CD collection.

Babyberry Pie by Heather Vogel Frederick is one of our favorite new books for toddlers. In rhyming text, repetition, and wordplay, this fun bedtime story gives the recipe for making "babyberry pie," from picking a baby from the babyberry tree and popping him in the tub, to putting powdered sugar on his nose and toes and tucking him into pie crust covers. |
This is a fun rhyme to do with your baby on your lap facing you.
I'm toast in the toaster
I'm getting very hot (gently bounce)
Tick, tock, tick, tock (sway side to side)
Up I pop!
(Lift baby up in the air) |
Rock your baby back and forth. Babies love the "aaaahhh" part as it's the first sound they can make.
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
If you see a crocodile,
Don't forget to scream, aaaahhhh!
