Living With Urban Wildlife
Wildlife is back! Though it may seem contradictory to say “urban wildlife,” many species of wild animals are finding city and suburb to be to their liking. John Hadidian’s presentation, Living with Wildlife on Urban Landscapes, will look at some of the types of conflicts wildlife in cities can cause, discuss humane solutions, and identify challenges we face within the context of urban ecology.  This presentation is scheduled for February 16 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon Zoo’s Banquet Center.

Child Safety Seat Clinic
Learn how to install your child’s seat correctly at our free clinic at the Main Fire Station, 300 B Avenue, on February 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
City Council Action Re-Cap
In lieu of the regular meeting on January 19, City Council attended the Centennial Celebration kick-off at the Lakewood Center for the Arts. This event included the unveiling of the Building Blocks Exhibit, an extraordinary exhibit of the city’s diverse and history-rich neighborhoods, and the inaugural showing of the Lake Oswego historical retrospective video. The Building Blocks Exhibit is on display at the Lakewood Center for the Arts and will remain at that location throughout the month of April. Visit www.lakeoswego100.com for news, updates, history, photos – past and present – event information, and to explore Lake Oswego’s historic evolution through a mini-documentary, A Lake Oswego Retrospective.

City Council held a special meeting on January 22 and 23 to develop goals for the upcoming year. City Council will meet again in a work session on February 2 to review its draft goals.  A work session has been added prior to each regular Council meeting.  Work sessions will occur from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the municipal courtroom.  The public is welcome to attend.

On January 26, City Council had a regular meeting where they adopted findings to amend the Community Development Code to equalize allowed lot coverage between public and private schools. The Council adopted an alternate version that specifies that lot coverage is not to exceed 30% for a school built to accommodate at least 100 students and that has at least two grades within the range of K-12.

At this meeting, Council also:
  • Proclaimed January 27, 2010 as Fire Fighter Appreciation Day
  • Received a midyear financial report which included revenues and expenditures from July 1 to December 31, 2009
  • Authorized City staff to apply for two Metro Construction Excise Tax (CET) grants to be used for the Foothills District Framework Plan ($295,000) and the Lake Grove Village Center Plan Implementation Strategy ($50,000)
  • Authorized City staff to apply for a Department of Land Conservation and Development Periodic Review Technical Assistance Grant in the amount of $83,000 to help fund the update of Goals 9 (Economic Development) and 10 (Housing) of the Comprehensive Plan
  • Adopted a resolution to transfer control of the Verizon Northwest, Inc. cable television franchise to Frontier Communication Corporation
  • Directed staff to continue work toward siting a dog park on the west side of Lake Oswego as part of the 2010-11 Capital Improvement Plan
  • Accepted staff’s recommendation to implement phase 5 of the LOIS upgrade and not authorize implementation of phase 6 at this time but instead to coordinate remediation efforts of the elevated portions of the City’s and BES’ interceptors
Detailed information on the above items is included in the Council Packet. For Council packets, as well as meeting summaries and minutes, or to view past meetings, visit the
City Council's webpage.
