Spirit of the Community Award Goes to LOHS Student
|
On February 9, Amy Carlton of Lake Oswego was named one of the top two youth volunteers in Oregon for 2010 in the 15th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. This is an extraordinary honor; more than 21,000 young people across the country were considered for the state-level recognition in this year’s program.
As a State Honoree, Amy will receive a $1,000 award, and engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C., May 1-4 for a series of national recognition events.
Amy, a senior at Lake Oswego High School, has raised more than $56,000 over the past two years to combat childhood hunger by recruiting teenagers to help her make and sell jewelry and other crafts. While working on a freshman history project, Amy was stunned to learn that millions of children go hungry in the U.S. Thinking about how she could help, Amy realized that she could start selling the earrings that she had been making as a hobby. She wrote a business plan and met with volunteer lawyers and accountants to set up a nonprofit organization called “Teens Fighting Hunger.” Then she began recruiting other teens to help her make her make jewelry, hats, scarves, greeting cards, and other items to sell. More than 300 teens have been involved in Amy’s initiatives.
