In just five years, the number of people aged 65 will increase nearly 50% in our community. The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center is excited to help promote age friendliness in the city, but we need to know what older adults need, now and in the future.
To help understand aging issues, and increase and improve resources that will establish Clackamas County as an age-friendly place that supports a person’s ability to age actively and successfully in their home or community of choice, a partnership - engAGE in Community - was created with Clackamas County Social Services, AARP Oregon and OSU Extension Service.
engAGE in Community will explore:
• How the physical environment, specifically transportation, housing, and outdoor spaces and buildings, is supportive of or a barrier to aging in place
• Whether the social, cultural, and civic environments are engaging, respectful, and inclusive of older persons
• How does the service environment provide community support and health services, and how is information communicated
To help gather this information, Clackamas County Social Services is recruiting volunteers and volunteer leaders to conduct surveys, interview community members, lead community asset mapping efforts, and other tasks. Volunteer Interviewers can expect to spend no more than 6-8 hours in any week between June and August 2010 until interviews are completed. Time commitment may vary from week to week.
The first volunteer training will be held at Clackamas County Social Services in Oregon City on June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. To register, contact Margaret McNamara at 505-650-5737.
For more information, contact Ann Adrian, Adult Community Center Manager, at 503-635-3758.
