A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. A valid United States (US) passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries. Only the US Department of State has the authority to grant, issue or verify United States passports. US passports can be issued only to US nationals, and appropriate proof of citizenship will be required.  Many countries around the world have instituted this six-month rule, which requires that travelers have at least six months of validity left in their passports at the time of arrival. Any applicant without six months of validity must get a new passport in order to meet that country’s entry requirements.  To determine a destination country’s entry requirements go to the passports section of travel.state.gov, find the "Country Information" tab ( https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country.html ), and search by country. The US Dept. of State has authorized the City of Lake Oswego Finance Department as a Passport Acceptance Facility.
