Please keep in mind that the Youth Action Council requires at least 20 hours of service per school year, as well as attendance at 9 monthly meetings and various sub-committee meetings. The Youth Action Council is a group of L.O. teens who work with the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Department to improve the quality of life for teens in our community. So far, the YAC has successfully initiated a Flag Football League, the Annual Food Challenge Contest, the Annual YAC Golf Tournament and much more!  Keep watching for updates on what this year’s team is up to!  For more information, contact Cydny Winslow at 503-697-6589 or email at teenprograms@ci.oswego.or.us.

Active involvement of YAC members is key to making activities happen for teens in LO. YAC members must be able to attend nine monthly meetings, provide at least 20 hours of volunteer service during the year, and work on a designated YAC subcommittee. Members lead and coordinate many of the committees. YAC members are teens working for teens!

The top action areas are listed below.

Awareness: Get the word out to teens about what is happening. A lot of teens don't know what already exists. YAC can help. One idea is to have a bulletin board at each high school to post teen opportunities such as jobs, community service and classes/activities. YAC will plan to update this bulletin and use other ways to get the word out.

Service: Teens like to help and volunteer. This committee finds opportunities to volunteer together and spreads the word to encourage others to participate too!

Activity: Develop classes, events and opportunities for teens to participate in. Some events have included the Flag Football League, the Annual Food Challenge Contest, the Flashlight Egg Hunt and the YAC Golf Tournament.

Political: Have a YAC member serve as liaison to the Clackamas County Youth Action Commission as well as connecting up with the Lake Oswego Youth City Councilor. This will help us keep our pulse on any politics in the community which we would/should be aware of.

Teen Center: The Youth Action Council has succeeded in its efforts to provide to Lake Oswego Teens a place they can call their own! After an amazing first year, the McKenzie Lounge for teens is headed into year two with many exciting activities for teens and tweens. The McKenzie Lounge is located in the West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way, and is proud to host the After School Activity Program (ASAP), as well as Java Jam and other teen events. If you would like to contribute to this innovative program, please contact Cydny Winslow, Teen Program Coordinator, at 503-697-6589 or email asap@ci.oswego.or.us.
