The term "building permit" is often used as a generic
term that includes the permits required for structural
work, electrical work, mechanical work, or plumbing work.
Most construction projects will require a permit, but there
are some exceptions.
You will need a building permit to construct, enlarge, alter,
move, or demolish any one- or two-family dwelling or related
structure. Other examples of when a building permit is required
include:
- adding a room
- building, demolishing, or moving a carport, garage, or shed
that measures 120 square feet or more in area or greater than
10 feet in height
- finishing an attic, garage, or basement to make additional
living space
- cutting a new window or door opening, or widening an existing
opening
- moving, removing, or adding load-bearing walls or adding
walls that affect exit patterns or fire and life safety
- applying roofing when all of the old roofing is removed
and new sheathing is installed
- building a stairway
- building a retaining wall
- building a deck more than 30 inches high
- putting up a fence more than 6 feet high
- moving more than 50 cubic yards or any amount of cut/fill
on sites affected by waterways or slope hazards
- adding an in-ground swimming pool
- installing or altering a sign
- changing the use of a structure; for example, youíll need
approval from Planning Division and a building permit to convert
a single family residence into a shop or restaurant, or to
convert a garage into an apartment
An electrical permit is required
when the work being done affects the electrical system in a
structure. Examples of such work include:
- extending a circuit
- wiring a new air conditioner
- adding an alarm system
- remodeling or adding kitchens or bathrooms
- installing a permanent hot tub, spa, or sauna

AMechanical permit is required
when the work being done alters the mechanical systems in a
structure. Examples include: adding or replacing an air conditioner,
furnace, heat pump, gas line, log lighter, gas log, fire place,
woodstove, exhaust fan, or range hood. To download a mechanical application permit, please go to applications.
A Plumbing permit is
required when adding or altering plumbing fixtures or systems,
including storm and sewer lines. Examples of work that requires
a plumbing permit include:
- adding or altering a bathroom or kitchen
- adding a permanent hot tub, spa, or pool
- adding or extending an irrigation system
- adding any groundwater or rain and roof drains
- adding or increasing a water service line
