Monthly Calendar of Events & Workshops in 2014

In honor of 25 years as a Tree City USA, Lake Oswego’s Urban & Community Forestry program will be celebrating trees with workshops and events every month throughout 2014, starting in April. The complete list of workshops and events in 2014, by month, is below.

Tree Pruning Workshop
Date/Time: Saturday, April 26, 9am-12pm
Location: West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way

Understand why, what, and how to prune to develop healthy, strong, and attractive trees and shrubs. Explore pruning types, proper cutting tools and techniques, and tree responses to pruning. Bring your favorite pruning tools, if you have them, and wear appropriate clothing for the outdoors. This hands-on program will be led by ISA Certified Arborist Rick Faber. Glenmorrie Neighborhood Annual Ivy Pull
Date/Time: Sunday, April 27, 1-3pm
Work together with friends and neighbors to clear invasive ivy from the Glenmorrie neighborhood, and then gather to relax and enjoy refreshments. For more information, including the meeting location, contact Judy Dauble at 503-636-1347. Visit some exceptional trees in the neighborhood while you’re there!

Friends of Iron Mountain Ivy Pull
Date/Time: Sunday, April 27, 1-3pm
Join Friends of Iron Mountain at Iron Mountain Park to help clear invasive ivy from the forest floor. Please wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and bring work gloves. Contact Mike Buck for additional details, including the meeting location.

Date/Time: Tuesday, May 6, 6:30pm
Location: Lake Oswego City Hall, Council Chamber, 380 A Avenue

Friends of Springbrook Park Ivy Pull
Date/Time: Saturday, May 17, 9am-12pm
Location: Meet at the Uplands Elementary School parking lot

Join Friends of Springbrook Park to help free trees that are covered with ivy. Meet at the Uplands Elementary School parking lot. Bring gloves and pruners and dress for the weather.


Heritage Tree Bike Ride
Date/Time: Sunday June 8, depart at 11am
Location: depart from Lower Millennium Plaza Park, First Street and Evergreen Road

Go on a bicycle tour of Lake Oswego’s Heritage Trees! We’ll take a hilly ride through Lake Oswego’s neighborhoods to visit some of the city’s grandest trees. Natural Resources Advisory Board booth at LO Farmers’ Market
Date/Time: Saturday June 14th, 8:30am - 1:30pm
Location: Millennium Plaza Park, First Street and Evergreen Road

Visit the Natural Resources Advisory (NRAB) booth at the Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market. Members of the NRAB will be on hand to provide information on the Heritage Tree Program, Backyard Certification Program, NRAB, and more.


Benefits of Trees Walk
Date/Time: Saturday July 19, depart at 1pm
Location: depart from the Lake Oswego Farmers’ Market in Millennium Plaza Park, First Street and Evergreen Road

Discover the benefits of trees during this 1.5-hour walking tour through the Evergreen and First Addition Neighborhoods. During the leisurely stroll, we will stop at various trees and quantify the economic, social, and environmental benefits they provide to our community!


Tree Protection & Tree Removal Workshop
Date/Time: Thursday, August 28, 6-7:30pm
Location: West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way

Explore the City’s tree code requirements for tree protection and tree removal permits. This workshop includes an indoor presentation and outdoor demonstration with examples of measuring tree diameter, tree protection fencing, techniques for protecting trees during construction, and more.  For free registration call 503-635-0290.


Iron Mountain Nature Walk
Date/Time: Wednesday September 20, 9-10am
Location: meet at the Brookside Road entrance to Iron Mountain Park

Take a walk through Iron Mountain Park to learn about the natural history and on-going restoration efforts by an active park stewardship group. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.


Right Tree In the Right Place Workshop
Date/Time: Thursday, October 16, 6-7:30pm
Location: West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way

This workshop will help participants understand the why, what, where, and how of planting the right tree species in the right place. Includes an indoor presentation and an outdoor tree planting demonstration.   For free registration call 503-635-0290.


Invasive Plant Management Workshop
Date/Time: Thursday, November 6, 6-7:30pm
Location: West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way

Learn about the negative impacts of invasive plants and how to identify and properly remove them. For tailored advice, feel free to bring samples of plants that you are concerned about.   For free registration call 503-635-0290.
