As we head toward fall and school is back in session, our focus changes just a bit to make sure we are supporting our schools.
I’ve had the great fortune of working closely with Dr. Heather Beck, our new School Superintendent. During a recent meeting with Dr. Beck and staff from both Lakeridge and Lake Oswego High Schools we spent quite a bit of time on school safety; from drop off plans, to drugs and alcohol, to bullying, I can say with certainty that we are of the same mind….. the safety of our kids is our priority!
From that meeting we were able to work through a police/ fire training event during the week that followed, focusing on how to deal with emergencies in our community –this training focused on the aftermath of “active threat” events like Sandy Hook, Columbine, and more locally, the Clackamas Town Center shooting in 2012. I think opportunities like this allow us to better understand how to work together to keep our kids safe.
Looking into the near future, we are working closely with our schools on security plans, and emergency preparedness. There is much to do, but we’ve agreed it is among our highest priorities.
And - we’ve had a lot of positive feedback on traffic flow around the schools – I think some of the modifications that we’ve made this year really make things better for drivers, the schools, and our neighborhoods – keep the suggestions coming, we appreciate your feedback.
