The Trees by Conrad Richter, tells the story of early pioneering in 1790. Sayward Luckett, a young girl pioneering with her family must face loss, fear and sadness along this journey to a new land. Sayward and her siblings, Ascha, Genny, Wyitt and Sulie all help her parents, Jary and Worth along the way. Jary, the mother, is very sick and Worth is away, hunting and building. Sayward, the oldest is left to look after the other children and help defend against cougars and wolfs in the developing woods.
