The Hunger Games, while presenting an interesting and gory idea, lacks a sort of originality. For years books like this have been written and turned out nicely. See Battle Royale by Koushon Takami. Similarities are abundant although subtle. The allure for The Hunger Games is the oppression of the government based on a system that appreciates only beauty and death. See The Uglies by Scott Westerfield. The protagonist Katniss is for the most part a blank white age character. Anyone with a strong will can slip into her character and fit the role. Of course, in the movie, Jennifer Lawrence did a satisfying job of individualizing Katniss, slightly. Overall though, the book presents a mildly intriguing story with mediocre depth and faint originality.
