Lock and Key is about a girl, Ruby who is uprooted from a life of drinking and working to make ends meet. Her mother leaves her and she lives alone for a few months waiting until she is 18 so she is able to legally live by herself, when the child social service finds her and moves her to living with her sister. Her sister and brother-in-law live in a fancy house and are extremely rich. The book is about her journey through the transition and how it may not be so bad after all.
I love this story because it is written as if by a teenage girl. The author really captures all of Ruby's emotions and conveys them to us through the words. The plot is interesting and you would never predict how Ruby deals with the problems she finds in her new life. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is not just another one of those high school problem books but one that puts a new perspective on how bad is easily turned into good. I was extremely sad when it was over, but I look forward to reading more books by Dessen!
