Agenda Item - 2010-09-20 (05) Sustainability Curriculum in Lake Oswego Schools
During the past year, all Lake Oswego schools have achieved Oregon Green School
status, and a new energy conservation plan has been adopted. Sustainability is a priority
for the School Board and for students at all grade levels. The school district is committed
to developing a comprehensive sustainability plan during the 2010-11 school year.
Similar to the Art Literacy model used to provide art instruction in our elementary
schools, the district is hoping to develop, in partnership and collaboration with parents, a
model for sustainability lessons that is school-based and parent-driven, bringing a
consistent sustainability lesson plan to every elementary classroom in the district.
The district will soon have elementary science labs at both Hallinan Elementary and Oak
Creek Elementary. All 5th and 6th grade students throughout the district should have the
opportunity for lab instruction at these facilities. The district will use funds to develop lab
experiences that reflect community sustainability commitments and partnerships, similar
to this year's Lake Oswego Watershed Project, conducted in partnership with the City of
Lake Oswego and the Lake Oswego Corporation
The Lake Oswego School District will use dedicated sustainability funds to further the
development of sustainability curriculum and materials that will supplement the district's
science curriculum.
