Lake Oswego Reads 2020
The Lake Oswego Library has selected the book
for the 14th annual community reading program,
Lake Oswego Reads!
The Lake Oswego Reads Steering Committee read 29 books and
ultimately selected Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore, a
finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction by Elizabeth
Rush. The book is well-written, thoughtful and personal in exploring
one of the most challenging topics of our time. Rush’s chapters include
personal accounts from individuals living in places notably affected
by sea level rise. Her prose is intimate, inclusive, dynamic, and
introspective. Her love of language and nature made this an enjoyable
read for the majority of the Steering Committee, and provided a
balance between the beauty and the uncertainty of the natural world.
This book was suggested from someone in our community, a local
educator Breck Foster, who teaches Social Studies and Spanish at Lake
Oswego High School. Her description really captures why this is the
perfect book for 2020. “To me the book was beautifully written and so
timely. There seems to be a critical awareness of the crisis we are facing
and yet many people don't know how to talk about it or what to do.
As someone who lived for four years in New York on the Long Island
sound and walked with my kids in the marshlands there, and having
lived most of my life in California near the coast, and now in the nature
of Oregon's coast and Willamette river valley, I am struck by how these
magical yet fragile places are in danger and this book both sounded an
alarm but also gave me hope of what communities can do to face these
challenges.”
Thanks to the Friends of the Library and sales from the used book
store The Booktique, 800 copies of the book will be given away on
January 13, 2020 at 6:30 pm at the Library. A Lake Oswego Library
card is required for the free copy. In February, there will be over 25
free events that tie into the book with expert speakers on topics like the
history of the governmental environmental policies, geology, backyard
habitat, marine heatwave, green new deal and the sunrise movement,
ecology of creative space and gathering inspiration from the natural
world, creating your personal climate plan, national flood insurance
plan within the broader context of flood risk, how settlement changes
the land and handling anxiety from things one can’t control. There will
also be films to see and a “What can you do” fair. Also, 20 artists are
reading the book and will create their interpretations for the annual
Lake Oswego Reads art show. For more information, please visit
www.lakeoswegoreads.org.
Brian Doyle Day Celebration
Wednesday, November 6,
4-5 p.m.
Each year the Library observes Brian
Doyle Day on November 6 (Brian’s
birthday) honoring the great award
winning author who lived in Lake
Oswego. He passed away in May of
2017 from a cancerous brain tumor at
the age of 60. This year, we will serve
cake and hear about his forthcoming
book, One Long River of Song.
One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten
The graduating class of 2036 just started the
year a little bit smarter.
A favorite scene playing in the Children’s Library is a young reader
proudly marching up to the desk, presenting their reading log filled
with colored-in circles, squares and triangles. Kids are having a
great time building their early literacy skills via LOPL’s 1000 Books
Before Kindergarten. The program is simple: parents and caregivers
read to their child whenever they choose, children track 100 books
per sheet, and visit the library to earn achievement badges and free
books along the way. On top of preparing children for school days
ahead, this experience furthers a positive relationship with their
library. An especially exciting moment is greeting any child who
has reached their 1000 book goal. It’s hard to say who wears the
biggest smile, the child, their adult, or the librarian.
Here are some warm words from participating families:
“When we signed up our one year old for the program, we thought we
would periodically check out library books to add to our reading tally,
but it really morphed into a weekly ritual! One week, she would want
books about bunnies, the next week books about trains, the next week
we were on to dinosaurs. It became a really fun way to see her mind
grow and her vocabulary rapidly expand. Heading to the library has
become one of our daughter's favorite things to do on the weekend
thanks to the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program.” ~K.B.
“The process of the 1000 Books program engaged our whole family in
reading, so our 3 year old daughter really became attached to family
reading times, and her stamina increased quickly for longer books.
We are so very pleased to call the Lake Oswego library home,
and hope that many other children and their families are able to
participate in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program.” ~A.M.
Registration is free and easy. Just visit the Children’s Library to
sign-up and receive your complimentary 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten tote bag, and your first log sheet.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a realistic
goal. How long might it take?
1 Year: Three books a day
2 Years: About 10 books a week
3 Years: About 7 books a week
4 Years: About 5 books a week
5 Years: About 4 books a week
