5. Director's Report-Bill Baars
• Due to a power outage on Saturday, August 29, the emergency generator kicked on. Soon the generator
malfunctioned and caught on fire and smoke filled the Library. The fire department was called, Library
patrons were evacuated and the Library closed for the afternoon. Several staff spent the afternoon greeting
patrons out front, explaining the situation and taking their returned items. Fans had been set up to go on
when the power came on during the night and staff met early Sunday morning to continue airing out the
building. By opening on Sunday the smoke had dissipated enough to open at the usual time. A temporary
generator is set up in the alley service entry until a new generator can be acquired which could take several
months. Baars was proud of the staff who worked together during this emergency.
• The HVAC that services the main public area broke down. One of the fans had thrown its bearings and
again the building had the smell of burning rubber.
• Baars has received numerous complaints about the Jehovah's Witnesses when they are in front of the
Library handing out literature. The Library Facility Policy allows for this kind of activity as long as they
are a nonprofit group, not soliciting funds, not hindering access to the building.
• Melissa Kelly, Circulation Manager, presented a new circulation policy which offers a temporary youth
library card which would give new or visiting residents the opportunity to check out at least three items.
Baars will take this proposal to the LINCC Directors Group for approval.
6. Chair's Report-Nancy Niland
• Niland thanked those who participated in staffing the Library's Farmer's Market booth over the summer.
• There was not a Sustainability Advisory Board meeting or a 50+Advisory Board meeting in August.
7. LO Reads-Cyndie Glazer
• The LO Reads 2016 book has been selected and announced. Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher by
Timothy Egan is non-fiction. The Steering Committee read a lot of books and worked hard in making this
selection. Egan will be speaking on February 10 thanks to the Friends for sponsoring his visit.

• Glazer shared the planning timeline for LO Reads. The website is now live, Jane Larson is again designing
the brochure, local organizations who have partnered in the past have been contacted, and 18 artists have
agreed to create artwork inspired by the book. In December the brochures will be printed and on January 7
they will be distributed by the Lake Oswego Review. January 9 is Friends Day for the book giveaway and
January 11 is the kick-off and distribution of 800 books. The Committee is working on planning events for
February. A sub-committee called the LO Events Committee has been created to help plan events and give
hands on help in February. Glazer shared some of the event ideas being considered.
• As Graham's Book& Stationery has closed the art show will now be at the Lakewood Theatre.
• Copies of the book will be given to LAB members at the next meeting.
• Glazer said Fred Baldwin is working on getting a title sponsor for LO Reads for$7,500. Glazer asked the
Board to let her know if they have any thoughts or suggestions for a sponsor. She said they would get a lot
of publicity and recognition and is well worth it.
8. Friends of the Library Update-Nancy Niland
• This is the last report submitted by President Terry Huber as her tenure as ends in September.
• September 17 is the annual business meeting which is open to the public. The guest speaker will be City
Councilor Joe Buck.
• At this meeting they will be voting on the slate of officers. They will also be voting on the Library Grant
Wish List, which will be a one time annual distribution rather than bi-annually.
• Also up for discussion will be the Booktique lease which is up in January 2016 and the need for larger
Booktique storage space.
• Huber thanked the LAB for their support of the Friends of the Library as they work together in supporting
the Library. She has enjoyed her six years as Friends' President but knows that the new President,Nancy
Niland, will do a wonderful job.
9. New Business
