ARBOR MONTH PROCLAMATION

Whereas, in 1872,J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
Whereas, the holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than
one million trees in Nebraska; and
Whereas, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and April 2022
has been proclaimed as Oregon Arbor Month by Governor Kate Brown; and .i
Whereas, trees can reduce topsoil erosion by wind and water, lower our heating and
cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and
provide habitat for wildlife; and
Whereas, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our
fires, and countless other wood products; and
Whereas, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of
business areas, and beautify our community; and
Whereas, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
Whereas, for the past 33 years the City of Lake Oswego has been recognized with TREE
CITY USA designation for having a viable urban and community forestry program
that meets the standards established by The Arbor Day Foundation and the
National Association of State Foresters.
NOW,THEREFORE, I,Joseph M. Buck, Mayor of the City of Lake Oswego, do hereby proclaim April
2022 as Arbor Month in the City of Lake Oswego, and I urge the community to celebrate
Arbor Month and the 150t" Anniversary of National Arbor Day, to support efforts to protect trees
and woodlands, and to plant and care for trees, for the benefit of this and future generations.
