Disability Awareness Month
WHEREAS, the City of Lake Oswego herby joins communities across the country throughout the
month of March to celebrate, recognize and advocate for people with disabilities.
WHEREAS, more than one in four (26%) adults in the United States lives with a disability.
WHEREAS, people with disabilities consist of the nation's largest minority group, as well as the
only group that any of us can become a member of at any time.
WHEREAS, everybody deserves to enjoy life, feel productive and safe, make choices, contribute
to society, live independently, and be included.
WHEREAS, creating equitable inclusive environments is a shared responsibility of everyone.
WHEREAS, in March, we take extra steps to raise awareness about people with disabilities and
to celebrate their contributions to our community and society as a whole.
WHEREAS, we invite the residents of Lake Oswego to become a Disability Ally and promote
inclusion for all by following these ten tips:
1. Educate yourself.
2. Know not all disabilities are apparent and there are many disabilities.
3. Treat people with disabilities with respect. Avoid giving advice or saying "you're
inspiring."
4. Talk to a person with a disability like anyone else.
5. Avoid making assumptions about someone's disability. Ask before helping.
6. Actively listen and don't be afraid to ask questions.
7. Realize every disability is on a spectrum.
8. Be an advocate and support accessibility.
9. Provide access and accommodations.
Zo. Be prepared to make mistakes, learn from them, and be open to changing your
behavior.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Lake Oswego City Council, proclaim March,
2023 as Disability Awareness Month in the City of Lake Oswego and call upon all residents to
celebrate it.

Women 's Sfistory Month
WHEREAS, The month of March officially became Women's History Month in 1987 and gives us
the opportunity to acknowledge the historical contributions of women in the United States; and
WHEREAS, during Women's History Month, trailblazers of the past are remembered, including
the women who are not recorded in our history books, and we honor their legacies by carrying
forward the valuable lessons learned from the powerful examples they set; and
WHEREAS, women have significantly influenced public policy, contributed to the building of
viable institutions and organizations that continue to support our communities, and played a
unique role throughout the history of the United States by providing the majority of the
volunteer labor force; and
WHEREAS, women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and
equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the
industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and the peace movement, which creates
a more fair and just society for all; and
WHEREAS, this month, we celebrate countless women and their victories, we continue our
work to build a society where women and daughters have the same opportunities as others,
and we honor the countless women who sacrificed and strived to ensure all people have an
equal shot at pursuing the American dream.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Lake Oswego City Council, proclaim March,
2023 as Women's History Month in the City of Lake Oswego and and urge all residents to join in
honoring the legacy of women of every race, class, and ethnic background who changed the
world by contributing to the economic, cultural, and social development of our society in
countless ways and to support the women who contribute to our future.
