Today, crews started removing trees along the project corridor, which are permitted for removal. This work is expected to continue tomorrow, Saturday 6/22, Friday 6/28 and Saturday 6/29.
Intermittent and rolling lane closures between Madrona Street and Douglas Way are in place during tree removal to accommodate equipment.
Construction will widen Boones Ferry Road to make room for new public features – which is a big reason for removing utility poles and placing them underground. For the same reason, some trees need to be removed. However, more than 170 new trees will be planted, and more than 80 trees will be preserved and protected in the corridor. For more information about tree removal and the planting plan, view the reference materials.
Traffic Pattern Change Starts Next Week
Boones Ferry Road, between Madrona and Lanewood, will be completely rebuilt while still being open to traffic. Starting mid next week, you’ll notice a temporary lane reduction between Madrona Street and Bryant Road. Instead of four lanes, there will be three: one lane in each direction plus a center turn lane. That will give crews room to maneuver and still keep the road open, though at times there will be flaggers and brief delays.
Crews will set up this new traffic pattern by working at night. The work is tentatively planned for Wednesday 6/26 – Friday 6/28. Some existing striping will be removed and new temporary striping will be placed. Traffic will be flagged on Boones Ferry Road between 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. to accommodate this work. Please expect delays and obey flaggers’ directions.
Once the new traffic pattern and work zone is set up, crews will begin saw-cutting the roadway and existing sidewalks and begin work on the excavation of the new underground utility trench.
Active Work Throughout the Corridor
There will be several lane shifts throughout the corridor on this two and a half year project. To minimize impacts, the contractor is aiming to build the major streetscape improvements in three different concentrated portions, working from the southern end (Madrona) to the northern end (Lanewood). The first major work zone, between Madrona and Bryant, is expected to take about nine months. Within this zone, crews plan to work on the west side of the road first, then switch to the east side, and then the middle median. However, due to the complexity of the project, there will be times where multiple crews are actively working throughout the project corridor and on some side streets.
Shop Local – Shop Lake Grove!
Boones Ferry Road and all its businesses will remain open during construction, so come out and support the businesses that support our community! Follow the blue cones and blue signs to enter business driveway points within the work zones.
Project staff and the contractor have been out visiting businesses between Madrona and Bryant Road over the last two weeks. Thanks for meeting us! Business visits will continue over the coming months. We look forward to meeting you and working with you during this major project.
Project approved work hours are 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, weekends 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and night work from 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. Most work will take place during the day, but because the project is large and complex, there will be times when work will occur at night. Night activities may include utility shutdowns, setting up traffic shifts, intersection work and paving.
Please note, construction activity and schedules change frequently due to weather, issues in the field, and other variables.
