Women's History Month 2024 - Nicole Palmeri

Work

I have worked for the Lake Oswego Police Department (LOPD) for seven years and am currently assigned as a Detective. I am passionate about representing and advocating for those who are exploited and victimized. I am privileged with the opportunity to show empathy, compassion, and commitment to vulnerable individuals who have shared their experiences and entered the legal system.

During my career as a police officer in Lake Oswego, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the department as a defensive tactic instructor and honor guard team member. I have had meaningful and rewarding experiences that align with my values and passions as a member of the Clackamas County Major Crimes, Crisis Negotiation, and Human Trafficking Teams.

Early Life Mentor

My horseback riding instructor, Candice, was a remarkable female mentor who taught me horsemanship skills and instilled valuable life lessons that have stayed with me. Her portrayal of hard work, confidence, and poise significantly shaped who I am today. These skills have translated into various aspects of my life, including relationships, work, and personal growth.

To this day, Candice’s influence on me can be seen by the simple yet powerful gesture of looking someone in the eye which, with a solid handshake, speaks volumes about respect, confidence, and taking up space in the world.  I have taken on her saying, “Say what you mean and mean what you say,” as a core value to communicate with purpose and integrity in my words and actions. I am thankful to have her as a part of my history, as she has strongly influenced me and other young women.

Women in Law Enforcement

Women have a crucial role to play in leadership positions within law enforcement. While historically male-dominated, the field can significantly benefit from the diverse perspectives and skill sets that women bring.

Women often excel in emotional intelligence, communication, and community engagement, which are essential for building trust and fostering positive relationships with their communities. These qualities can be particularly effective in de-escalating situations and resolving conflicts peacefully.

Furthermore, there is a need for women's strengths to be recognized and utilized in command roles within law enforcement. Women can bring unique perspectives and approaches to leadership, contributing to more inclusive and effective decision-making processes.

Encouraging more women in law enforcement to develop tactical skills and pursue promotional goals is essential for creating a more balanced and representative leadership landscape. By providing support, training, and opportunities for advancement, we can empower women to thrive in leadership positions and make meaningful contributions to law enforcement.

Inspirational Person

Some of the most meaningful relationships I have in law enforcement are with women I have met through various assignments. Watching my friend and colleague, West Linn Police Department’s Sergeant Dana Gunnarson, navigate her career has served as a source of inspiration for me. I deeply admire Sergeant Gunnarson's dedication to professionalism and commitment to serving her community through leadership within the department.

Through women-empowered relationships, like the ones I have been blessed with throughout my career, the bonds of camaraderie and mutual respect within law enforcement are strengthened. These connections enrich professional lives and provide a strong support network that has helped me navigate the challenges and complexities of the job as a woman.

As I continue my journey in law enforcement, I hope to facilitate women-strengthened relationships that foster a supportive and inspiring network of colleagues that can make a positive difference not only in one’s career and personal life, but also in the lives of those we serve.

Motherhood

As a mother of two, I can't help but reflect on the profound impact of women in shaping families, communities, and cultures through their role in motherhood. I acknowledge the progress that has been made thanks to the tireless efforts of women throughout history, advocating for change and expanding opportunities for themselves and future generations. Today, the influence of women remains deep in many homes through nurturing and raising children, and it extends far beyond the boundaries of traditional roles encompassing education and economic, political, and societal progress. I honor the diverse experiences and accomplishments of past and present women and the power of motherhood that continues to shape our society and future positively.

Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month is a time for me to reflect on the achievements and contributions of women in my personal life and throughout history. I celebrate their successes and resilience and acknowledge the progress made for women’s rights in my community, profession, and globally. I find powerful affirmation in uplifting women’s voices and stories.
