The last few months have been quite busy for the Police Department K9s and their handlers.
Chase, an almost five-year old Malinois, has been teamed up with Officer McMahon since 2016. In October they assisted Clackamas County deputies with a report of a suspect actively breaking into a vehicle just outside the city in unincorporated Lake Oswego. The suspect was still in the car when Officer McMahon and Chase arrived and because of the dog, the suspect surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.
In September Molalla Police requested a K9 to locate a wanted suspect who had resisted arrest. Officer McMahon and Chase tracked the suspect to some dense bushes. Upon notification of the dog coming in after him, the suspect surrendered without incident.
Szemi, a four-year old German Shepherd, and Officer Mayr have been paired up for about a year. In July a male with felony warrants with caution indicators committed a theft at Safeway here in Lake Oswego. Officer Mayr and Szemi were able to locate him and he surrendered without issues.
About a month later, a suspect driving a stolen vehicle led West Linn Police in a pursuit before fleeing on foot into a large wooded area. Officers on scene set up containment until Officer Mayr and K9 Szemi arrived. Szemi tracked the suspect deep into the brush, where after failing to surrender, Szemi apprehended the suspect who was then taken into custody on multiple felony charges.
These four calls are just a sampling of the many that the K9s have been involved with this year. The handlers spend numerous hours each month with ongoing training and care of the dogs. Both teams are well respected members of the Oregon Police Canine Association, representing the Lake Oswego Police Department proudly, not only here in Lake Oswego but in neighboring jurisdictions as well.
