Ed Marsoun was recognized for his 10 years of service to the City at the monthly Engineering staff meeting in February. Ed started out as an inspector, and then took on the role of Engineering Development Coordinator, which he currently holds. Congratulations to Ed!
SW Employment Area Plan Workshop
The SW Employment Area Plan Advisory Committee hosted a public workshop on Thursday, February 12 to identify potential land use and transportation changes for the light industrial and commercial areas in the district, with the goal of removing barriers to private investment and supporting the area as one of the city’s three Employment Centers. Approximately 25 property owners, businesses and neighbors worked in small groups with the committee to map out their vision for the future of the area, and share their ideas about how the district could better serve business and resident needs. The advisory committee will meet on April 9 to review draft land use and transportation alternatives that came out of the workshop. The public is welcome to attend and provide comment at advisory committee meetings, and is encouraged to sign up for the project e-news subscription to get the latest news and announcements. Training and Testing at the River Intake Pump Station
Over the last few weeks, staff from the Water Treatment Plant have been training at the river intake pump station in Gladstone. They’ve been learning all about the new pumps, fish protection screens and operational equipment.
This week, the pumps are undergoing operational testing. Next week, commissioning will begin and the new river intake pump station is expected to pump water to the treatment plant in West Linn! In the summer, the existing intake will be demolished and, afterwards, the area will be landscaped.
Firefighter Fit Testing
This week Lake Oswego firefighters performed annual fit testing on their breathing apparatus masks. A breathing mask is a vital part of the SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) keeping contaminated air out of the lungs. The test consists of each firefighter donning their mask and while connected to a computer, perform different movements to check for any leaks, and make sure that their mask fits correctly. This test is a department requirement that meets both OSHA and NFPA standards and is conducted by our own personnel saving time and money to test the 50 firefighters annually.
New Officers Sworn-In
The Swearing-In ceremonies have been a strong tradition at the Police Department, allowing new officers to swear to the Oath of Office and read the Code of Ethics in front of family, friends, City Staff, and their new co-workers.
Officer Joshua Price is a veteran of the US Air Force and worked as an IT Engineer before working at the Lake Oswego Police Department. Officer Russell Palmeri was previously employed at the US Marine Corps Police Department at Camp Pendleton, California prior to his recent move to Oregon. Community Service Officer Cole Duvall interned with the Lake Oswego Police Department last Winter and has since completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Portland State University. And Community Service Officer James Euscher attended the University of Oregon on a football scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, June of 2014
Firewalls and Security
If you’ve been reading the news recently, lots of fairly large companies have been getting their defenses penetrated by the “bad guys,” usually looking for data they can sell.
Although most of the City’s data is freely shared with the Public, keeping our defenses current is a job we take seriously.
To keep up with security, the IT Department is upgrading its two eight year old firewalls which segregate our main city Local Area Network from our Wide Area Network known as the BUG (the Broadband User’s Group) which has it’s own network of firewalls that keep us safe from the internet. One of those two firewalls actually segregates the Police Department from the rest of the City traffic as a compliance measure with the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
