1st Street Mid-block Crosswalk Improvement Project

The current brick crosswalk on 1st Street between A Avenue and Evergreen Street is more than 20 years old. The crosswalk has had maintenance and reliability issues over the years. Concerns about visibility for vehicles and pedestrians have also been raised, particularly in the downtown area that is heavily used by the traveling public throughout the year. The City plans to replace the crosswalk in spring 2026.

The proposed improvements to the crosswalk include:

  • Increasing pedestrian visibility by adding new, higher visibility signage and trimming adjacent trees.
  • Removing the current brick crosswalk and replacing it with a new, colored concrete crosswalk, and stamped in a herringbone pattern. This is to match the aesthetics of the current sidewalks on 1st Street.
  • Adding high visibility striping and pavement markings.

Project Updates

Monday, April 20, 2026

We have been monitoring the traffic conditions the last few days and made some adjustments to the traffic plan:

  • 1st Street remains ONE-WAY southbound from A Avenue to Windward and Lakeview Village parking lots on 1st.
  • Evergreen Road between 2nd Street and the parking lots on 1st is now back open to two-way traffic.

Friday, April 17, 2026

Crews have mobilized to start working on the crosswalk.

Traffic Reminder:

1st Street, between A Avenue and Evergreen Road, and Evergreen Road, between 1st Street and 2nd Street have temporarily transitioned to ONE-WAY traffic only through April 30.

Please follow the one-way route for everyone's safety.

Friday, April 10, 2026

Pending weather, crews are expecting to mobilize to the site and start construction on the crosswalk and implement the one-way traffic transition on Wednesday, April 15.

Wednesday, April 8, 2026

A contractor has been hired and we are expecting them to mobilize to the site the week of April 20.

Schedule and Traffic Impacts

Construction is expected to take place sometime in mid-late April 2026 and take up to two weeks to complete. During construction, 1st Street, between A Avenue and Evergreen Road, and Evergreen Road, between 1st Street and 2nd Street, will temporarily transition to one-way traffic. All vehicular traffic: please enter 1st Street from A Avenue, and exit onto Evergreen Road.  2nd Street will remain open to two-way traffic.

This temporary traffic change will allow the contractor to conduct their activities safely, while keeping the street open for local businesses, residents, park goers and the traveling public.

There will be some on-street parking restrictions on both 1st and Evergreen, but both the Lakeview Village and Windward public parking lots will remain open.

The goal is to complete the project before the Farmers' Market season begins in early May.
