Boones Ferry Road Retaining Wall Replacement Project
In 1988, the City constructed a curb-tight sidewalk along Boones Ferry Road, between Rainbow Drive and Kruse Way Place. In addition to the sidewalk, an approximately 3-ft high, 1,500-ft long wood retaining wall was also installed along the west side of the highway, abutting the sidewalk.
The retaining wall shows signs of failure from rotting or decaying posts. This is causing the wall to lean into the pathway in several sections.
The City has hired a consulting engineering firm to develop conceptual design alternates for replacing approximately 1,500-ft of the wall, between Rainbow Drive and Kruse Way Place, and replacing the staircase on the hillside leading from Carman Drive to Boones Ferry.
The goal of this project is to replace the aging and damaged retaining wall along Boones Ferry Road and the stairs between Carman Drive and Boones Ferry Road, with a stable, cost-effective and long-term solution.
Schedule
- Preliminary concepts and early design: spring-summer 2026

Project Updates
March 2026
During the week of March 23, 2026, crews will be conducting exploratory drilling and soil sample investigations along the retaining wall project limits on Boones Ferry Road. Expect lane closures or traffic shifts in the southbound lanes of Boones Ferry Road, between Rainbow Drive and Twin Fir Road, from 7am to 6pm. This work is expected to take up to three days to complete.
