LOFD Radio Communications Exercise

Saturday, June 11, 2022 - 8:00am to 12:00pm

On Saturday June 11, the Lake Oswego Fire Department (LOFD) will be holding a city-wide radio communications exercise. The purpose of this exercise will be to evaluate a draft FRS/GMRS radio channel plan developed to help citizens communicate when normal modes of communication (i.e. phone/internet) are disrupted.

LOFD is seeking upwards of 50-60 participants to help verify that this draft plan will allow citizens to communicate not only with neighbors within their neighborhood association, but also to effectively pass messages from all neighborhoods to a central location in the city and from central location back to each neighborhood. Anyone interested in this topic is encouraged to sign up to receive further information and updates. The exercise will begin around 8 a.m. and continue to roughly 12 p.m. but participants do not need to be available for the entire duration of the exercise. In fact, there will be a need for people for shorter periods of involvement during the exercise.

Participants will not need to have any prior radio experience nor special training and will be utilizing a mix of Family Radio Service (FRS) or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios. We highly encourage those with little to no knowledge to join us. All pertinent background information will be provided. FRS radios are readily available and do not require a license to operate. Neighborhood associations, through the Lake Oswego Neighborhood Enhancement Grant program are obtaining FRS radios for use during a disaster. GMRS radios provide the option to utilize a radio repeater to increase the reception coverage area but do require a license from the FCC to operate. The GMRS radio license covers everyone in the immediate family and does not require a user to pass an exam to get a license.

An informational webinar is tentatively planned for the evening of June 2 at 7 p.m. to provide participants and anyone interested in this event additional background and instructions prior to the exercise.
