Global Stories - Mandarin

Saturday, February 1, 2025 - 10:30am to 11:00am

First Saturday Readalouds feature stories and songs told in different languages by Lake Oswego community members. Each month spotlights a different world language, familiar songs, and a simple craft.

In December we welcome Jessica to lead our readaloud in Mandarin. She shares the following:

Hi, this is Jie! You may call me Jessica.
I was born and grew up in northern China and moved over to the US for school. I worked for a Tech company for 8 years before our whole family moved over to the beautiful Pacific Northwest about 3 years ago.
When I was in elementary school, my mom was also my Chinese Mandarin teacher at school. I enjoyed reciting poems and writing (you could say drawing) Chinese characters in different calligraphy styles with her. Those lovely memories might be the reason why I've been super interested in learning different languages and understanding cultural indications.
I'm a mother of two young lovely kids. My son is 6 and a half (He insists I must say the half) and my daughter just turned 9. I share my childhood memories with them by reading Chinese storybooks and teaching them to speak and write Chinese. We also often get together to explore new crafting activities after school. I'm honored to bring some of those fun times to you! Looking forward to meeting you all!

(If your native language is not English, and you are interested in reading a story aloud to children at the library, please speak to one of our Youth Services Librarians for more information.)
