Take a walk along the fence at Westlake Park to mark Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI) and read our newest StoryWalk® installation, A Boy Named Isamu by James Yang. The seemingly simple story invites readers to imagine themselves in the place of a quiet boy in early-twentieth-century Japan. Yang’s text meets child readers on their own level, framing the natural world as a source of curiosity and delight. It works as both an introduction to a fascinating artist and a tribute to the quiet joys of the natural world.

What is a StoryWalk®?

StoryWalk® is an innovative and delightful way to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Laminated pages from a children’s book are displayed and installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you’re directed to the next page in the story. StoryWalks promote early literacy, physical activity, and family time together in nature. They are also an opportunity to reach community members who may not come to the library.
