Please join us for a presentation of African Americans of Portland with author Kimberly Stowers Moreland.
Kimberly Stowers Moreland, MBA, MURP, is the wife of Michael L. Moreland and mother of four amazing young adults: Katherine, Mike Jr., Kristen, and Karina. She owns Moreland Resource Consulting and has over 30+ years of experience in the public sector, including urban, historic preservation, community development, and urban planning. She was a Project Manager for Prosper Portland and an urban planner for Portland, Tacoma, and Salem.
Kim co-owns Moreland Resource Consulting LLC (MRC) with her husband, Mike Moreland. Kim has over 30 years of experience in urban planning, community and economic development, fund development, historic preservation, and historical research. MRC was established to create sustainable, equitable, and culturally rich communities. MRC clients include small business owners, non-profit organizations, and public agencies.
Moreland serves as the President of the Oregon Black Pioneers, whose mission is to preserve the history of Black Oregonians. On behalf of the Oregon Black Pioneers, she authored Images of America: African Americans of Portland (Arcadia Publishing). She is also a member of the Portland Historic Landmark Commission.
Kimberly began documenting Portland's Black history as a city planner with the City of Portland. She worked with the community advisory committee and local historians to produce History of Portland's African American History (1805 to the Present). Moreland assisted the City of Portland in successfully listing five historic buildings significant to Portland's African American history.
She is a steadfast volunteer and actively involved on several cultural, historic preservation, and community advisory boards, including:
- Oregon Black Pioneers, President
- Historic Albina Advisory Board
- Portland Historic Landmark Commission, former Vice-Chair
- Black Advisory Business Council of Washington County
- Accelerator Media, Fund Development Chair
This program is offered by Lake Oswego Public Library in cooperation with the Lake Theater & Café. Admission is free and no ticket is required (though food and drink purchase are encouraged to offset the cost to the Lake Theater). Doors open at 6:30, the presentation begins at 7:00.
