Understanding Italy: An exploration of history, food, cultural heritage and current issues through contemporary Italian cinema
Using the themes of the movies of the Italian Film Festival, Professor Zagarella will discuss topics, changes and challenges facing Italy society today.
Professor Zagarella is the Language Courses Coordinator at Portland State University and teaches beginning, intermediate and advanced Italian. Her areas of interests are language teaching pedagogy, Italian culture and civilization, contemporary literature and Mediterranean Studies. Her current research focuses on literature of migration and national identity in Italian and Italophone literature.
In 2014 she organized the first Italian Film Festival at Portland State University with the partnership of Associazione Culturale Italiana. She has been the co-executive director of the Portland Bologna Sistercity Association, she is currently on the board of the Italian Business Club Foundation and is the President of the Oregon chapter of Sicilia Mondo, which promotes Sicilian culture and tradition all over the world.
Born and raised in Sicily, Professor Zagarella moved to Portland in her late twenties following the calling of the heart (love). Since 1988 Zagarella has been calling Oregon home.
