2017 - Rise of the Rocket Girls
We celebrated a month full of wonderful and exciting events related to 2017's pick for Lake Oswego Reads: Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt!
NOTE: The Library will be undergoing a renovation of lobby and staff space on the main floor during the winter. Due to the construction timeline, most Lake Oswego Reads events will be hosted at other sites throughout the City, thanks to the cooperative nature of our supporters. We appreciate your understanding and your willingness to participate in our off-site events!
Join your neighbors to celebrate the 11th annual Lake Oswego Reads. Bring your Lake Oswego Library card to receive a free copy of Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars.
Rocket Girls author, Nathalia Holt, will speak in Lake Oswego on February 8 at Lake Oswego High School Auditorium. Admission will be free thanks to the Friends of the Library. A ticket will be required and tickets will be available at the Lake Oswego Library starting at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 14th. Arrive early, as a line forms well before 11.
View displays related to the 11th annual Lake Oswego Reads program through the month of February. Original art work from artists of all ages, photographs, artifacts and more! Displays will be up at Lakewood Center for the Arts, City Hall, the Lake Oswego Arts Council, Parks & Rec Building (formerly Palisades School), the Library, and local businesses.
Mary Kaiser, a research scientist at NASA AMES Research Center for 30 years, will explain the history of space that few know.
Rosanne Sachson, an architectural interior designer, will share her experience while working at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 1993, Ms. Sachson received a prestigious commission from the NASA space program to create the architectural and interior design for the innovative Flight System Testbed and Project Design Center.

Join FTC Team Axis 7187 for fun, learning and ROBOTS! They are a Lake Oswego FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team that became the World Champion in “Robot Intelligence” in 2015.
Enjoy a Mad Science magic trick and get ready to be dazzled by a series of experiments that feature the awesome power of gas!
Join Professor of Physics, Stephen Tufte, for a visit to the Observatory. He will introduce you to this facility and give a brief history of Astronomy at Lewis & Clark, much of which involved research on binary star systems.
Well recognized artists will explain the art they created after reading Rise of the Rocket Girls which will be displayed during February at Lakewood Center for the Arts.
Lunch at a local restaurant and then join Professor of Physics, Stephen Tufte, for a visit to the Lewis & Clark College Observatory.
Since its founding in 1859, St. Mary’s Academy been known for educational excellence and the “full development” of each student. Today, more than 40 percent of SMA graduates pursue college majors of math or science. Principal Kelli Clark, faculty and students will discuss the school’s STEM endeavors.
Nathalia Holt’s Rise of the Rocket Girls is the true story of women who helped launch America into space. Join us as we hear Nathalia Holt’s presentation: Rocket Girls: The Unsung Heroes of NASA. Admission is free, but a ticket is required.
NASA enthusiast, Dave Suing, will discuss the contributions women made to the space shuttle program, including flight assignments, the first woman to command a space shuttle flight, and interesting details of their missions.

Join us in a brief workshop led by Teresa Schader to find out about personal narrative storytelling and learn some techniques to better communicate and tell your story. Then, share your five minute story with your fellow adventurers! Or, just attend the storytelling to listen to the brave adventurers in our community.

The story of Wernher von Braun and Alabama’s significant contribution to the exploration of space. The movie tracks the evolution of Huntsville, Alabama from “The Watercress Capital of the World” to “Rocket City USA.”
Join Professor Peter Drake and students from Lewis & Clark College for a panel discussion about the field of computer science. What is computer science? What exciting work can one do in this area? Why is there currently such a focus on getting more women into computing?

A look back at the space race and its influence on art, architecture and pop culture during the mid-20th Century. Presented by Jane Carr, the Reference & Technical Services Manager at the Lake Oswego Library.
Students of Lake Oswego High School art and photography classes will display their interpretations of Rise of the Rocket Girls. Meet the teachers and student artists and view the art which will be on display for sale through February. All proceeds from the sale of the students’ art will go to the individual students. Thank you to the teachers Katie Brink and Corrie Rosensteel for having their classes participate.
Learn from this group of women pioneers in local science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields about their journey through their scientific careers in Oregon. Their enlightening perspective can inform women about the path to success in the STEM fields.
Jan Dabrowski’s visit to the Hayden Planetarium at the age of five ignited a lifelong passion for astronomy. Today, Dr. Dabrowski teaches science classes at Marylhurst University and serves as a popular museum consultant. Join a lively presentation on new planetary discoveries and technology that facilitates space exploration.

The fifties saw a big change in the dance moment in American history. Here’s an opportunity to go back to the fifties and dance and snack on food from that era.
Dr. Ronald Tammen, professor of Political Science and International Affairs Counsellor at the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government, Portland State University will review the Cold War Era. Prior to Portland State he was Department Chair and Associate Dean at the National War College in Washington, D.C.
Join the Library’s Carissa Barrett for a fun night of trivia inspired by Rise of the Rocket Girls. Put your thinking cap on and “team up” with friends or come on your own. Get ready for a lively and entertaining mix of questions from math and science to food and fashion from the 50s. All ages. Food and beverages available for purchase.
Come and enjoy an evening with Rose City Astronomers members Dr. Katherine Kornei and Greg Marshall. Dr. Kornei, who holds a B.S. in astrophysics, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in astronomy, will give a brief introduction including an audience participation exercise. Greg Marshall will share his amazing astro-photographs and describe how he captures and processes these images.
Dr. Jan Dabrowski, Associate Professor, Science & Interdisciplinary Studies at Marylhurst University, began his science career at the age of five with a visit to the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. He has maintained an avid interest in astronomy, physics and other sciences ever since. He’ll explain how astronauts live in space.
The Portland State Aerospace Society (PSAS) is a student aerospace group at Portland State University that designs, builds and launches intelligent amateur rockets in central Oregon. PSAS has always been a strong advocate of minorities and women in aerospace. In honor of Rise of the Rocket Girls they will have three women engineers describe PSAS rockets and technologies, as well as their experience and the personal challenges they have faced. The three include an undergraduate, a graduate student and a recent graduate. They will also have displays for all ages to see.
Hilda Pereyo from Evergreen Aviation will present a program that blends aviation and history with fun activities. Participants will learn about key women mentors and pioneers in the fields of aviation and aerospace — from engineers to shuttle pilots. This program will engage, inspire, and educate anyone interested in aviation and beyond.
The Rocket Girls occasionally had time for a cocktails. Here’s your opportunity to sample cocktails from the 50s: Side Car, Tom Collins, Singapore Sling, Mint Julep and more. Shirley Temples will also be available. Passport Drawing at 7 pm
