The Blob, Zooplankton & Indicators of Ocean Change 2/22

Saturday, February 22, 2020

For 22 years, scientists have been collecting water and plankton samples off the coast of Newport in an effort to monitor ocean conditions in a changing climate. Hear Hatfield Marine Science Center research assistant Samantha Zeman talk about what those scientists have found, including the fascinating creatures called pyrosomes that were featured on an  episode of Oregon Field Guide.

Samantha Zeman is a research assistant at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. She works in an ocean-monitoring program that collects oceanographic data on bi-weekly research cruises. Her focus is zooplankton taxonomy and quantifying the importance of lower trophic levels.
