EVENT CANCELLED Calling All Teens to the Cascadia 9 Games Session 4/19
EVENT CANCELLED
Do you know how you will survive when the Big One hits? Play some video games and find out! Join us before the Library opens to try out Cascadia 9: Rehearsing Disaster. Cascadia 9.0, 9.1, and 9.2 are video games about surviving during and after an earthquake. You can also check out some tools and tips for staying safe, and participate in a Q & A talk with the game designers.
The Pacific Northwest is awaiting another giant earthquake like the more than 40 magnitude 8 and 9 events that have rocked the region in the last 10,000 years. This is because of our proximity to the Cascadia subduction zone, a tectonic plate boundary where the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate is diving underneath the North American plate. The building tension caused by friction between the two plates will eventually trigger an earthquake from northern California to southern British Columbia. Read more about the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Following the quake, western Oregon could be without water, fuel, and medical services for months. While recent press has warned the public about "the Big One," much of the Pacific Northwest remains unprepared. This interactive session is about learning preparedness by doing, featuring custom video games that Lewis & Clark College researchers have made and used in experiments about motivating earthquake preparedness. Learn about the video games at https://www.cascadia9game.org/.
