Hindustani Classical Vocal Concert

Experience a Hindustani classical vocal concert by Kaushiki Chakraborty with Ambi Subrahmaniam on violin. This is a special concert opportunity offered by Kalakendra.

Kaushiki Chakraborty is an Indian classical vocalist and a composer. She attended Sangeet Research Academy, and was one of the exponents of Patiala gharana. Her repertoire covers pure classical, Khyals, Dadras, Thumris, Bhajans etc. and several other forms of Indian music. She is the recipient 2005 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the Asia-Pacific category. She is the daughter of Hindustani classical vocalist, Ajoy Chakraborty and she has held performances with him as well as her husband, Parthasarathi Desikan. Hailed as "the new king of Indian classical violin" by The Times of India and “India’s Itzhak Perlman” by Ozy Magazine, Ambi Subramaniam was trained by his father and guru Dr. L. Subramaniam since he was three years old, and gave his first performance at the age of seven. He has received awards and recognitions including the Ritz Icon of the Year Award, the Rotary Youth Award, and two Global Indian Music Awards. Kalakendra, Society for the Performing Arts of India, is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization formed in February, 1987 and incorporated in the State of Oregon. Kalakendra programs are drawn from centuries-old, culturally diverse performing art forms of India. Kalakendra arranges programs by that culture’s finest, internationally acclaimed performing artists, including some who have established themselves as teachers and performers in this country, as well as younger artists of outstanding caliber. Kalakendra’s mission is to introduce, promote, and enhance awareness of the various performing arts of the Indian subcontinent through concerts, classical dances, recitals, and lecture-demonstrations.
