Ian Madin Art Display

Wednesday, April 1, 2026 - 10:00am to Thursday, April 30, 2026 - 7:00pm

During April, the Library will feature a display of stone sculptures by Lake Oswego artist and retired geologist Ian Madin. Madin selects stones formed across Oregon’s ancient landscapes, including basalt from the Columbia River Gorge, as well as rhyolite, tuff, and other rock types. Each stone bears textures, colors, and natural patinas shaped by water, gravity, and time. In his studio, he lightly polishes sections of the interior rock, creating a contrast between raw exterior surfaces and smooth inner planes. This process reveals hidden geologic history within the stone.

The exhibition connects to the LO Reads theme by foregrounding the rock and geologic forces that shape landscapes and underlie earthquakes and other natural events. Madin will also be giving a talk about Oregon geology titled "Geology Rocks: Faults, Volcanoes, and Earthquakes in Oregon" on Sunday, April 12 at 4:00 pm.

Sculptures will be on view in the adult World Languages section, on level 2 of the library.
