Third Tuesday Author: Sindya Bhanoo
Author, Sindya Bhanoo will discuss and share selections from her award-winning collection of short stories, Seeking Fortune Elsewhere.
Sindya Bhanoo is the author of the story collection Seeking Fortune Elsewhere (Catapult). The collection was the winner of an Oregon Book Award, the New American Voices Award and the Writers League of Texas Award. It was a finalist for the Pen/Robert W. Bingham Prize and the Sergio Troncosco Award for the Best First Book of Fiction. It was also longlisted for the American Library Association’s Carnegie Medal and The Story Prize. Sindya’s fiction has appeared in Granta, New England Review, Glimmer Train, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of an O. Henry Award, the Disquiet Literary Prize, an Elizabeth George Foundation grant, and scholarships and fellowships from the Bread Loaf and Sewanee writers conferences.
A longtime newspaper reporter, Sindya has worked as a reporter for The New York Times and The Washington Post, where she is still a frequent contributor. In 2020, she was a Knight-Wallace Reporting Fellow at the University of Michigan.
Her reporting has received support and recognition from numerous organizations, including the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, The New York Press Club, the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, Kaiser Family Foundation and the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT.
Sindya is a graduate of UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, the Michener Center for Writers, and Carnegie Mellon University.
She lives in Corvallis, Oregon and is an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University.
