Westlake Oak Woodland Walking Tour

The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson is saturated with descriptions of rivers, prairies, Minnesota woodlands and how the native Dakhóta people connected with and protected these habitats.

Join Oswego Lake Watershed Council  for a walking tour of local seeds, soils, flowers, and trees, connecting with the land and relearning local foods, plants, and medicines. Oswego Lake Watershed Council and partners have been working to enhance habitat with Westlake Homeowners Association since 2018. This beautiful Oregon White Oak Woodland is home to a diversity of wildlife and native plant communities, including centuries-old white oaks and a diversity of wildlife and native plant communities! On this family friendly walking tour, we will observe wildlife, wildflowers including camas and trilliums, native flowering shrubs, snags, oak trees and more! We will also learn how this woodland fits into larger systems – land tending, climate change, fire, active management, food systems, watershed health, upland successional processes, and partnerships will be highlighted.

We will be outdoors so please dress for the weather (long pants, layers, hats)). Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required. Bring your own water bottle, and feel free to bring gloves if you like to pull weeds while you're out in the woods! Please bring any medication you may need (Asthma Inhaler, Epi-Pen, etc.) This tour will be on small, unpaved trails on uneven terrain, and may present accessibility limitations - please contact jack@oswegowatershed.org if you have mobility concerns, and we will work to accommodate your needs. Unfortunately, there is no bathroom on site. Please join us to learn about oak woodland ecology!

Thank you to the City of Lake Oswego, Clackamas SWCD, Westlake HOA, and Oregon Conservation and Recreation Fund for financially supporting our work. More information about the project and a full list of partners can be found at https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f3388ca79a13497e8cb30793b4b0e8c1
