Iron Mountain Park Soft Trails are OPEN
Project Background / Summary:
In accordance with the Iron Mountain Master Plan, soft surface trails will be constructed. The trails will provide additional opportunities for hiking at Iron Mountain and will offer connectivity to the new park developments at Iron Mountain Park.
C2, a trails design and build company will build the trails once a public involvement process is completed and a proposed trail alignment is designed. This project is scheduled for completion this fall.
Project Updates:
February 24, 2021: Trails are open to the public.
January 2021: Trails are being worked on this month as weather permits. Please stay off these trails while work is in progress.
December 2020: The rock-fall fencing has been installed above the Hunt Club and the construction of the trail is underway from the western portion heading east to the Summit trail.
October 2020: The Iron Mountain Soft Surface Trails project will begin construction in November of 2020 with a proposed completion in May of 2021. The Parks staff facilitated public engagement meetings to discuss the trail alignment and obtain feedback from the community. Consultant, C2 Consulting, revised the alignment based on the input. In October the Parks Board unanimously endorsed the revised trail alignment. The following links provide additional information regarding the process and the trail alignment.

Project Objectives: all under the context of preserving the natural environment while purposely creating access.
- Segment (A) Connect the new trailhead to Iron Mountain Trail (existing) to the West (Brookside).
- Segment (B) Connect the new trailhead to Summit Road, offering a nature experience through the lower portion of the park near Iron Mountain Blvd.
- Segment (C) Address the Summit to Iron Mountain Trail switchback user trail, making it more sustainable and user friendly.
Trail width: designed for anticipated use and similar to existing trail use in park.
- Portland Guidelines, 18”-48” for hiking trails and/or Mountain Biking, 0 – 15% grade.
- Iron Mountain Trail (existing), 36” – 72”, 0 – 18% grade.
- Summit Trail (existing), 18” – 30”, 0 - ~25% grade.
- Other Lake Oswego Parks, 18” – 72”, 0 – 20+% grade.
User management:
- All trails in Lake Oswego are currently open to pedestrians and bicycles.
- Very few reported conflicts between users.
- Ability to close trails to users if conflicts occur.
Version #1
Segment (A) connects new trailhead to Iron Mountain Trail at a vertical elevation acceptable to Hunt Club, avoids sensitive areas, average grade < 7%.
Segment (B) connects new trailhead to Summit Road travelling parallel to Iron Mountain Blvd. approximately 50’ – 150’ from road, avoids sensitive areas, average grade < 7%.
Segment (C) connects Summit to Iron Mountain Trail minimalizing switchbacks, travels through previously undisturbed areas on steep slopes, average grade = 7%.
Version #2
Segment (A) connects new trailhead to Iron Mountain Trail at a vertical elevation acceptable to Hunt Club, avoids sensitive areas, average grade < 7%.
Segment (B) connects new trailhead to Summit Road travelling parallel to Iron Mountain Blvd. approximately 20’ – 150’ from road, avoids sensitive areas, average grade < 7%.
