Youth Tennis

The Tennis Center provides a wonderful place for young people to learn about tennis and to become competent in the sport. There are opportunities to learn and engage in both competitive and noncompetitive play at any age and ability level.

To help place your child in the appropriate class level, here are detailed class descriptions:

 

Red Ball Rookies 

A fun introduction to tennis for ages 5 & 6. Play games, and improve coordination, balance, and agility. Your child will develop an athletic foundation, and begin to learn tennis fundamentals. The red ball is larger than a standard yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25% compression), making it easy for even the youngest players to hit comfortably. The courts and nets used in red ball tennis are much smaller, making it easier for kids to have fun and be successful. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Red Ball Rookies advance to Red Ball 1.

Red Ball 1

For new players ages 7-8 + 5-6 year-olds who have completed Red Ball Rookies and have instructor approval. Have fun learning strokes, movement, and more! The red ball is larger than a standard yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25% compression), making it easy for even the youngest players to hit comfortably. The courts and nets used in red ball tennis are much smaller, making it easier for kids to have fun and be successful. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Red Ball 1 advance to Red Ball 2.

Red Ball 2

For players ages 5-8 who have completed Red Ball 1 and/or have instructor approval. Build on the skills you learned in Red Ball 1! Continue stroke development, improve movement and agility, and begin to learn strategy, all while having fun! The red ball is larger than a standard yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25% compression), making it easy for even the youngest players to hit comfortably. The courts and nets used in red ball tennis are much smaller, making it easier for kids to have fun and be successful. All equipment is provided. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Red Ball 2 advance to Orange Ball 2.

Orange Ball 1

For new players ages 9-10. Have fun learning strokes, movement, and more with this introduction to tennis. The orange ball is the same size as a standard yellow ball, but it bounces a little lower (50% compression). Orange ball players use the regular net on a smaller court, with a smaller racquet, all of which makes it easier for them to have fun and be successful. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Orange Ball 1 advance to Orange Ball 2.

Orange Ball 2

For players ages 9-10 who have completed Orange Ball 1, Red Ball 2, and/or have instructor approval.   Build your skills, raise your confidence, and gain experience. The orange ball is the same size as a standard yellow ball, but it bounces a little lower (50% compression). Orange ball players use the regular net on a smaller court, with a smaller racquet, all of which makes it easier for them to have fun and be successful. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Orange Ball 2 advance to Green Ball 2.

Green Ball 1

For new players 11-17. Have fun learning strokes, movement, and more with this introduction to tennis. The green ball has a higher compression than the red and orange balls (75% of a standard yellow tennis ball), which makes it move a little slower and bounce a little lower, which makes it easier for them to have fun and be successful. Players use a full-size court, and the racquet may be full-size or slightly smaller, depending on the player. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Green Ball 1 advance to Green Ball 2.

Green Ball 2

For players ages 11-17 who have completed Green Ball 1, Orange Ball 2, and/or have instructor approval. Build your skills, raise your confidence, and gain experience. The green ball has a higher compression than the red and orange balls (75% of a standard yellow tennis ball), which makes it move a little slower and bounce a little lower, which makes it easier for them to have fun and be successful. Players use a full-size court, and the racquet may be full-size or slightly smaller, depending on the player. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Green Ball 2 advance to Jr. Excellence.

Yellow Ball 1

For new players 12-18. Have fun learning strokes, movement, and more with this introduction to tennis. Players use a full-size court, and the racquet may be full-size or slightly smaller, depending on the player. All equipment is provided. With instructor approval, students completing Yellow Ball 1 advance to Yellow Ball 2.

Jr. Excellence

Accelerated skills, strategy, mental training techniques, and physical development for players ages 7-18. This level supplements the advanced student's knowledge, and provides preparation and support for competitive tennis. This is a comprehensive program. Professional's approval is required.
