TREE PLANTING
Saturday, April 25, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Westlake Park, 14165 Bunick Dr, park in the parking lot and meet at the main entrance near the restrooms and playground
Celebrate Arbor Month by planting trees with Parks and Recreation staff at Westlake Park. Learn what to look for in selecting a high-quality tree and practice proper tree planting techniques. Understand why, what, and how to prune to develop healthy, strong, and attractive trees and shrubs. Explore pruning types, proper cutting tools and techniques, and tree responses to pruning. WILDFIRE SAFE LANDSCAPES
Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Waluga Park - East, 15505 Quarry Road, meet at the picnic shelter
Kick-off Wildfire Preparedness Month by learning tips for creating defensible space to help prevent fires from starting near or spreading to your home and see examples of what the City has been doing to manage park natural areas for wildfire risk reduction. This workshop is led by Lake Oswego Fire Marshal Matt Amos and includes a seated presentation at the picnic shelter followed by a walk through the natural area. PREPARING FOR EMERALD ASH BORER

Join Parks & Recreation staff to learn about Emerald ash borer (EAB), an invasive beetle that infests and kills ash trees. This tiny green insect has the potential to wipe out native and non-native ash in only a few years. Even though EAB cannot be eradicated, there are steps we can take to slow its spread and limit its impacts. This workshop will cover ash tree identification, signs and symptoms of EAB, management strategies, and tree species alternatives for replacing ash. Capacity is limited to 40 participants. Identify and discuss common native and invasive tree species with two ISA Board Certified Master Arborists on a walking tour through George Rogers Park. Learn common terms, concepts, and techniques used in tree identification, and become familiar with how to identify a tree by looking at leaves, fruit, bark, twigs, and form. CREATING BACKYARD HABITAT

Join Friends of Tryon Creek to learn about creating natural habitat in your own yard for native flora and fauna and consider the benefits of Backyard Habitat Certification. The Backyard Habitat Certification Program is conducted in partnership with Bird Alliance of Oregon and Columbia Land Trust to support urban gardeners and their efforts to create and enhance native habitats.
