CodeRED Successfully Used to Find Missing Child
Thanks to CodeRED and a citizen’s quick action, a missing 8 year old Lake Oswego boy was located and safely returned home. The boy was reported missing (on his bike) at approximately 5:51pm. After connecting with the parents and an initial search, a message was sent out using CodeRED, the City’s emergency notification system, at approximately 11:40pm - less than an hour later the boy was found. We would like to thank all of those who helped by responding to the CodeRED message and finding 8 year old Ricky Gonzalez.
CodeRED is used for significant emergencies such as floods, earthquakes, bomb threats, gas leaks, boil water notices, missing children or elderly, and electrical outages. This notification system allows City officials to quickly deliver emergency notification messages via telephone, email, and text message citywide at a rate of 1,000 calls per minute.
Lake Oswego started with CodeRED in August of 2005. In the last 12 years, the City has had 33 emergency activations for everything from missing endangered people, boil water notices, armed suspects, evacuation for brush fire, flooding, shelter in place/shots fired in the area, to evacuation for slide. Only three of the activations occurred after 10pm. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause but do appreciate all of you who participate in the program. This is just one instance that helped safely return a lost child.
