LAKE OSWEGO – On September 18, 2013, John Gary Schrunk Jr. was sworn in as a police officer with the Lake Oswego Police Department after 17 years of running a construction business. He started the basic police academy on October 14, 2013 and was set to graduate on February 21, 2014.

On about January 10, 2014, John fell ill while at the academy and was taken to the hospital. After a series of tests, doctors discovered that he had an aggressive, cancerous, brain tumor. John fought the cancer valiantly throughout the year but succumbed to his illness on December 30, 2014. “Although he was only of the police department family for a short time,” said Chief Don Johnson, “John made a big impact on all of us and he will definitely be missed.”

The police department will be participating in a celebration of life ceremony on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 1 p.m., at the Abundant Life Center, 835 N. Second St., in Jefferson, Oregon.
